You Asked For It

Well, you did.
Here is some reading I think is very very important.

Lately my reading has been more edifying than entertaining (though Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser are both pretty funny fellows, actually, especially for books about food). Find me something I can do/consume/whatever to help me cope with a world gone wrong.

Ummm, what is Nature-Deficit Disorder??

It's the tongue-in-cheek description of the state of our children today; no one plays outside.

It's not an actual "disorder", though, right? They seem to be making up a lot of those these days....

No, it's not. He says like 50 times in the book, "THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL MEDICAL THING, THIS IS ME SAYING KIDS SHOULD GO OUTSIDE MORE."

Ooh, that last one looks good. I may have to add that to my reading list. Fast Food Nation, too.

1) Last Child has interesting perspectives on the indoor-childhood that I, having grown up in the country, didn't even think of. I enjoyed it.
2) Fast Food Nation was fascinating in that it looked beyond the obvious "what's in the 'food'" and the impact on the employees (it did these things too of course); it also described the effect the fast food mentality had on the country and society as a whole.

I've always seen Fast Food Nation in the bookstore, but I haven't read it yet. I really want to.
